Personal project.
The aim of this project is to develop a series of photographic images that do not require a conventional camera. Like all projects in photography it will be assessed using the following criteria:
AO1: Research, critical understanding and ideas
AO2: Experimenting, refining and developing
AO3: Documenting imaginatively and reflecting
AO4: Creating personal and meaningful outcomes and evaluating them
You already have experience of making cyanotypes and photograms/Rayographs. However, there are other techniques and processes that create photographic outcomes where a conventional camera is not needed.
Part of the challenge of this project is to develop your Tallis Habits. For example:
INQUISITIVE
COLLABORATIVE
PERSISTENT
DISCIPLINED
IMAGINATIVE
So, we will also be reflecting on how we are learning using the Tallis Habits web app. This will help us keep track of which habits we are using, how strong they are and how we feel about our progress.
Getting startedHere are some ideas for how to get started with this project:
AO1: Research, critical understanding and ideas
AO2: Experimenting, refining and developing
AO3: Documenting imaginatively and reflecting
AO4: Creating personal and meaningful outcomes and evaluating them
You already have experience of making cyanotypes and photograms/Rayographs. However, there are other techniques and processes that create photographic outcomes where a conventional camera is not needed.
Part of the challenge of this project is to develop your Tallis Habits. For example:
INQUISITIVE
- What does the word photography mean? What is a photograph?
- How did people think about photography before cameras were invented?
- How do I make photos without a camera? Where can I go to find out?
- Can I be a photographer without using a camera?
COLLABORATIVE
- How can I collaborate with others to create unusual and surprising images?
- How can I help my classmates reflect on the quality of their work?
- What will be the best ways to display my finished images?
- How can I best share what I have learned on my website and blog?
PERSISTENT
- How do I solve my own problems?
- How do I invent new ways of making images?
- Can I keep going when I'm unsure or find things difficult?
- Am I prepared to try new ways of doing things?
DISCIPLINED
- Am I prepared to refine the quality of my work over time?
- How do I know if my work is good enough?
- What's the best way of learning something new?
- How do I make sure I am making progress?
IMAGINATIVE
- How do I take advantage of good ideas I might have?
- How do I make better links between the things I know?
- How can I make best use of the work of other artists/photographers?
- Am I prepared to take risks and experiment?
So, we will also be reflecting on how we are learning using the Tallis Habits web app. This will help us keep track of which habits we are using, how strong they are and how we feel about our progress.
Getting startedHere are some ideas for how to get started with this project:
- Create a new page in the Unit 1 section of your site entitled Personal Project: Camera-less photography
- Choose an appropriate header image
- Research the history of camera-less photography. What was photography like before cameras were invented? How have artists continued to experiment with camera-less techniques since the invention of the camera?
- Write up your research as an introduction on your new page.
- Use Pinterest and other web-based sources to find a series of camera-less images you really like. Present these imaginatively on your website with accompanying text explaining why you are interested in them.
- Choose one of the techniques you already know for creating a camera-less photo E.g. cyanotype, photogram/Rayograph. Think carefully about a creative idea. Use your chosen technique to create a small series of images expressing your idea.
- Evaluate the results.
- Refine your technique and make another series of images.
- Evaluate again and refine if necessary.
- Research an unfamiliar technique E.g. Chemigrams. Document the process/technique on your website.
- Experiment with using this new technique.
